The Metadata department provides descriptive records of all materials held by the library. Please contact the department to Report a Cataloguing Error.
The primary function of the Metadata Unit is to provide accurate and timely access to various materials and resources that support the educational goals of the University of Winnipeg and that meet the information needs of the University of Winnipeg community.
The staff in the Metadata Unit is responsible for describing and classifying print, non-print media and electronic resources in accordance with international bibliographic standards and local library guidelines and procedures. The department is committed to developing and maintaining a quality database of bibliographic information in order to facilitate the retrieval of library materials by staff members and students through the library’s online catalogue.
To further facilitate the use of the library’s materials, the Metadata Unit provides a ‘rush cataloguing’ service for items whose status is listed in the online catalogue as ‘in process’. ‘In process’ status items can be requested by filling out a print form available from the reference desk. Alternatively, ‘in process’ items may be requested by clicking on the ‘recall item’ button in the online catalogue. After the patron fills out the printed or online form, the information is forwarded to the Metadata Unit. Once the item is catalogued, a Metadata staff member places the material on the hold shelf in the Circulation Department and contacts the patron to let him or her know that the book is ready to be picked up.
