Borrowing Requirements

Mon. Aug. 19, 2019

Starting September 1, all library users must present their university ID Card or Special Borrower Card to borrow materials from the library. This also includes study room, physical reserves, media, and equipment bookings; it does not affect electronic holdings or remote access. Students, staff, and faculty members can visit Student Central (the first floor of the Rice building) to obtain an ID Card. Guests can visit our guest services page for information on how to obtain a Special Borrower Card.

Background: Previously, library patrons who did not have an ID Card or Special Borrower Card were allowed to borrow materials if they provided staff with additional credentials to confirm their account status. The library has recently upgraded our account management software, and the new system will no longer support this functionality.

This policy does not change the requirements for obtaining a library account or the responsibility of borrowers.
