Food for Fines

The UWinnipeg Library is running the "Food for Fines" campaign from December 4th through 12PM noon on December 15th. Food and general hygiene products will be accepted. Donated items go to the UWSA Food Bank. Here are the basics:

  • A $2 fine waiver will be applied for each item donated to a maximum of $30 (15 items);
  • The food items cannot be dented, must be labeled, and must have an expiration date at least four months away;
  • Bring the food items to the Library's Circulation Desk;
  • The waiver applies only to current fines -- it does not apply to charges for lost or damaged items and cannot be used as a credit to be applied to future fines;

According to Winnipeg Harvest, the 10 Most Wanted Food Items are:

  1.    Canned Fish and Poultry – chicken or turkey; tuna or salmon packed in water.
  2.    Canned Fruit and Vegetables – packed in own juice.
  3.    Canned Stew, Chili, Brown Beans
  4.    Peanut Butter
  5.    Whole Grain Pasta
  6.    Baby Formula and Food – iron-enriched formula; baby food jars of vegetables, fruit or meat; infant cereal such as oatmeal, barley or rice.
  7.    Rice – Plain, brown, converted, or parboiled
  8.    Canned Spaghetti Sauce
  9.    Cereal – plain, fiber, non-sugar coated
  10.  Canned Soup – vegetable, tomato, lentil, pea
