Event: Two-Spirit Representation in Graphic Novels
Mon. Oct. 21, 2024
A panel discussion in celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month
The University of Winnipeg and Portage and Main Press are pleased to present a panel discussion on Two-Spirit representation in graphic novels. This event is free, and all are welcome. Join us in Convocation Hall (University of Winnipeg, Wesley Hall*) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, October 28.
Albert McLeod, Elaine Mordoch and Alice RL, creators of Between the Pipes, and Tasha Spillett, author of Surviving the City, will join us. The discussion will be followed by a reception, and books will be on sale during the event.
About the books
Between the Pipes explores toxic masculinity in hockey through the experiences of an Indigenous teen. This graphic novel tells the story of Chase, a thirteen-year-old hockey player who learns more about himself and his identity in the face of prejudice and homophobia.
Surviving the City is a story about womanhood, friendship, and colonialism. This series of three graphic novels follows the teenage years of two best friends, Miikwan and Dez, as they navigate the challenge of growing up in an urban landscape.
*The venue is wheelchair accessible. Convocation Hall can be accessed through Leatherdale Hall.
