Join us in celebrating Black History Month
February is Black History Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the contributions and achievements of Black people, and reflecting on the challenges and systemic barriers they continue to face in their daily lives.
This year’s theme is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” We recognize and celebrate the legacy of Black Canadians, whose leadership, creativity, innovation and resilience have shaped our past, continue to influence our present, and will inspire future generations.
There a several ways you can celebrate Black History Month and learn more about the history of Black communities at the UWinnipeg Library.
Join us for a panel discussion
The University of Winnipeg Archives is hosting a panel discussion on Tuesday, February 3 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The event will highlight three initiatives working to preserve the history of the Black experience in Manitoba in efforts to combat the erroneous dominant colonial historical narrative.
A Q&A period will follow the presentations. In addition, the University Archives will curate an exhibition featuring materials celebrating Black history in Manitoba, and items from the Black Canadian Experience Centre will also be on display all afternoon. Light refreshments will be available.
Explore our resources
The library offers various research guides, created by our librarians, on topics such as Race, Racialization and Racism and Colonization, Decolonization and Postcolonialism.
The Archives also has several collections you can explore if you're interested in the history of Black communities in Manitoba. It includes the BIPOC collections, the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba Inc. fonds, and the Frances Atwell collection.
