Using The Library 101

Fri. Jan. 26, 2024

A student is at a desk, reading a book. We can see a pile of books on their right and library shelves behind them.

A quick guide on how things work at your library

Whether you’re new to the University of Winnipeg or just need a few reminders, this article is here to help by answering some questions you could have while using the library.

How and when can I come to the library?

The library is located on the 4th and 5th floor of Centennial Hall. If you come from the entrance near the security booth, you can use the stairs, the escalators or the elevator (in Lockhart Hall) to come say hello!

Our hours vary seasonally, so it’s always best to plan your visit and check the library hours before coming to see us.

I need help with my research. Who can I talk to?

Our librarians will be happy to help you with anything you need!

Please feel free to come in person and ask questions at the Reference Desk. If you prefer, you can also talk with us through our online chat. It’s the little red and white text box icon in the bottom right corner of our website. And if ever you need more help, you can schedule an appointment with one of our friendly librarians!

NOTE: The Reference Desk and Online Chat are usually open on weekdays during regular business hours. You can check today’s hours to make sure someone will be here to help you.

I would like to borrow a book to bring home. How does that work?

You finally found the material you needed for your assignment and want to keep it for a bit? That’s great news! Just go to the Circulation Desk to check it out. Don’t forget your University of Winnipeg ID Card, or you won’t be able to bring the book home with you.

NOTE: The library also offers online resources such as e-books, journals and articles.

Someone else has borrowed the book I need. What can I do?

Some books are popular, but it’s nothing to worry about. You can always use the ‘’recall item’’ button in the library catalogue. The other person has 7 days to bring the book back. We will contact you once the book is ready to be picked up at our smart lockers on the 1st floor of Centennial Hall.

How long can I keep a book I borrowed?

Outside of certain exceptions, most library materials will be due at the end of the current term. Please check the loan periods table for complete details, or ask when you come to the library.

NOTE: Whatever your due date is, keep in mind to check your mailbox every now and then. Someone else may need the material you borrowed and recall it. If that’s the case, we will let you know, and you’ll have 7 days to bring it back to the library.

If you need to keep your book a little longer, you can also ask for a renewal if it has not been recalled.

If you have any other questions about using the library, you can check our FAQ, visit the library or ask on our help chat. We’ll be happy to help!
