Student Support
In addition to providing access to books and articles, the library offers students assistance and expertise in planning, performing, and presenting research for their course assignments. We are pleased to propose both staff-assisted and self-guided options, depending on your needs.
The Reference Desk is located on the first floor of the library. During the Fall Term, it is open every weekday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
If you’re not sure how to start an assignment, borrow a book or use a research database, you can visit the Reference desk to ask for help. Library staff will be happy to answer any questions you have. They can also explain vocabulary questions (e.g. what’s a scholarly source?), help you choose search terms to find the right resources, and more.
If you cannot visit the library, the Help Chat is the best way to get connected to a real library human who can answer most questions. You can access the Help Chat from any page on our website. Look for the red and white textbox icon at the bottom of the page.
Librarians and staff monitor the chat on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
You can book a consultation with one of our librarians if you need more in-depth support for your course assignments and research projects. Librarians can help with finding, analyzing, and using information sources.
Librarians are assigned to specific academic programs. Please visit our contact page to connect with the appropriate librarian.
In addition to visiting the library, students can meet with a Librarian for research assistance during drop-in hours at various campus locations or via Zoom.
Indigenous Student Services Centre
From September to April, the Indigenous Engagement Librarian, Danielle Bitz (d.bitz@uwinnipeg.ca), will have regular weekly hours in the Indigenous Students Services Centre to provide students with library reference services.
International Students, Accessibility and Extended Services
Contact Librarian Michael Dudley (m.dudley@uwinnipeg.ca) to make an appointment for research assistance either in-person at the library, elsewhere on campus, or on Zoom. Michael Dudley also offers drop-in research assistance sessions on Zoom every week, from September to December:
- For students registered with Accessibility Student Services: Mondays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
- For International Students: Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Please, send an email to Michael Dudley if you're interested, in order to receive the Zoom invite.
Consult the research guide “Introduction to the Library for International Students and New Immigrants” to learn more about the UW Library and get tips and resources tailored for newcomers.
Research guides are tools created by librarians providing useful and popular resources, such as books, articles, websites, and more, for academic subject areas. Research guides can also include key concepts and definitions, study tips, research tips, and information on library services.
You can browse our research guides by format, subject or librarian.
The Assignment Calculator is a time-management tool that will help you plan your work more efficiently. It will break down your assignment into manageable steps and suggest a timeline based on your due date. Each step includes helpful tips and resources to help you complete your assignment.
Please note that the UW Library assignment calculator is dedicated to research papers only. Calculators from other academic libraries can help you with different projects such as podcasts, lab reports and more.
